A Memoir

by Tara Westover

Tara Westover grew up in a junkyard in Idaho with a mentally ill father that served as the patriarch for her Mormon family. Her flight to find an education and claw her way out of the system of pain are more a search for truth for herself. This is a story of that search and the toll it took on her.

Review ★★★★★

The early physical traumas of Westover’s life are eventually dwarfed by the psychological, and both sets are hard to stomach. Mental illness is a nuanced and fluid hazard that is as hard to define as art. I’m glad that Westover was able to escape, but saddened that so many of her family are living in darkness. Maybe this book will act as a beacon for them, and others, who are trying to escape a similar cycle.
